Peter McIntyre was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in
1910. He was educated at Otago Boys' High School and at the
Unversity of Otago, and at the age of twenty went to London to study
at the Slade School.
His subesequent work included book and magazine illustration, and
stage decor (at Sadler's Wells and the Coliseum). At the outbreak of
war he joined a New Zealand volunteer unit formed in London as an
Anti-Tank Battery, and served in this, as a gunner, in Egypt. Here
he was 'discovered' by General Freybert, who commissioned him as
Official War Artist, and in this capacity Peter McIntyre served in
Greece, Crete, North Africa, and Italy.
After the war he returned to New Zealand and has lived there ever
since, except for painting trips to the Antarctic, to Hong Kong, and
the Pacific - and his American West travels that produced this book
- plus a round-the-world trip centered on travel in Britain and the
Continent. His pictures of hong Kong formed an exhibition that
toured the United Stated for three years and in London.
Previous publications include his illustrated autobiography, The
Painted Years, and two large-format color volumes, Peter McIntyre's
New Zealand and Peter McIntyre's Pacific, to which this book is a
companion volume.
Early in 1970 Queen Elizabeth awarded the coveted Order of the
British Empire to Peter McIntyre for his increasing success as a an
author and for his accomplishments in the fine art fields.
